The Sofia Hotel is proud to introduce The Sofia Archives — a new series exploring the people, places, and events that shaped both San Diego and the historic hotel that has stood at its center since 1926.

Beginning this Thursday, we'll share a new chapter each week, uncovering stories from a city that has continually reinvented itself while remaining deeply connected to its past.

Some stories take place just steps from our front door. Others reveal the larger history of the neighborhoods, landmarks, waterfront, businesses, and individuals that helped shape San Diego over the last century.

Where the Story Begins

Episode 1

The year was 1926, in San Diego, California. Prohibition was law across the United States, though downtown San Diego remained active long after midnight — behind late-night restaurant doors, inside upstairs clubs, and in crowded bars where nobody asked questions.

Broadway After Dark

Episode 2

After midnight, Broadway belonged to a different crowd. The theater crowds had gone home. But downtown San Diego was still alive. Taxi horns and barroom doors echoed through the streets long after the marquees went dark.

The Overnight Route

Episode 3

Long before commercial flights connected California, travelers crossed the state aboard Pickwick “Nite Coaches” — built for overnight journeys. Passengers read beneath small lamps, unfolded sleeping compartments, and drifted through the night as the California landscape disappeared beyond the windows.

Episode 4

In his first season as a bellman, Matteo had learned to read a guest in the time it took the elevator to arrive.
The woman in Room 410 had come in on the late Pickwick from Los Angeles — hat box, leather trunk, no one waiting for her at the desk.

Episode 5

By the late 1920s, radio still felt like the future. Inside the Pickwick Hotel, KGB Radio broadcast music, news, and voices across Southern California — reaching families gathered around their sets each evening, adjusting dials through static to find something worth hearing.

The Talking Pictures

Episode 6

By the late 1920s, moviegoing had become one of America’s great obsessions. Downtown Broadway was growing quickly beneath glowing marquees as audiences lined up outside the Balboa and Spreckels theatres each evening.

Saving Balboa Park

Episode 7

The exhibition halls, sculpted towers, and tiled arcades built for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition were never meant to last. City officials had designed them as temporary structures — expecting most to be torn down once the fair ended and the visitors went home.

Before Sunrise

Episode 8

By the early twentieth century, word had reached fishing towns across Sicily and Southern Italy — there was work along the California coast. Some immigrants arrived by steamship, then continued south by rail toward San Diego, drawn by rumors of an expanding Pacific fishing industry.

Smokestacks or Geraniums

Episode 9

As San Diego grew through the Pickwick years, the city became locked in an argument over what it wanted to become. Some pushed for factories, shipping, and smokestacks rising above the harbor. Others believed the city’s future lay in parks, architecture, and the natural beauty drawing visitors to Southern California.

The Letter Home

Episode 10

Before postcards became souvenirs, travelers ended their evenings in hotel lobbies writing letters home. Some described California sunshine and ocean air. Others wrote about crowded sidewalks, theater marquees, and the strange feeling of arriving somewhere still growing into itself.

The Sugar Empire on Broadway

Episode 11

By the time the Spreckels Theatre opened in 1912, the family behind it had already built one of California’s most powerful dynasties. Sugar money built mansions, yachts, rail lines, and newspapers. It also built one of downtown San Diego’s grandest stages.

Episode 12

By the late 1800s, Chinese immigrants had begun arriving in San Diego — many fleeing poverty, famine, and political unrest with little more than trunks, family letters, and the hope of work somewhere along the California coast.

The Men Who Imagined San Diego

Episode 13

In the early 1900s, San Diego was still an uncertain city on the far edge of the American West. Los Angeles was growing faster. San Francisco dominated the coast. Downtown San Diego still carried the rough energy of a frontier port shaped by railroads, sailors, and gambling halls.
Then the city attempted something wildly ambitious.

Harlem of the West

Episode 14

A line forms outside the Douglas Hotel as taxis pull to the curb beneath the glow of Imperial Avenue. Inside, musicians unload trumpet cases beside sailors on leave, dancers in satin, and touring performers pressing through the doors of the nearby Creole Palace.

The Fastest Man in the World

Episode 15

A crowd gathers along the Coronado shoreline as a wooden aircraft rattles across San Diego Bay. People had come expecting a crash. In 1911, San Diego was a coastal city of roughly 40,000 — known for tourism, the Hotel del Coronado, and not much else.

The Last Age of Sail

Episode 16

For years, the Euterpe carried cargo between Britain and India with little public attention. Built in 1863 on the Isle of Man, the iron-hulled sailing ship worked trade routes during the final decades before steam transformed ocean travel.

Christmas Then and Now

Episode 17

On New Year’s Eve 1914, thousands of San Diegans gathered beneath the lights of Balboa Park waiting for midnight. Streetcars rattled downtown carrying crowds toward the new Spreckels Organ Pavilion, where more than 4,500 pipes rose into the December air beneath the open California sky. Elsewhere, Europe had already descended into World War I.

The First Plunge

Episode 18

On the first morning of 1900, crowds gathered beside San Diego Harbor as the city entered a new century. At the water’s edge, the newly completed San Diego Rowing Club stood above the bay on wooden pilings — surrounded by steamships, small boats, and cold Pacific water.
